Highfield Adventure Playground is an amazing staffed indoor and outdoor play area where children learn how to take risks in a supported safe environment.
Along with the staff and local community we are able to create a learning, cohesive, neutral environment and in order to be an adventurous playground it has to have staff. Also it’s the staff that make the place the majority over 100 adults and kids rated the staff as the most important aspect of the playground.
After a successful campaign by the community and endless support (and now management) from Sharrow Community Forum ‘Adventures’ continues to be a place where children of different ages and backgrounds can play together. Many local families come to play, for some this is their holiday, but people travel from all over the city too.
Kids love the enormous tunnel slide, the wild zip wire and the water pump in the summer, digging channels in the sand. Indoor arts and craft activities are organised by the staff and the younger children in particular enjoy these. Older children play pool and table tennis. There’s also a special indoor mezzanine floor for toddlers. Over 8 year olds can play in the playground without parental supervision.
We are just re-introducing ‘loose parts’ which are integral to Adventure Playgrounds. They are bits of wood, daily items and tools that replace what kids would play with if they were in a more rural area or garden – sticks, trees, holes.
Play at Adventures is mostly self motivated and directed. Children become engrossed and don’t want to leave!
Friends of Adventures is the community group supporting the playground. We always need support and time from people, so if you’d like to help out we’d appreciate any time you can give. Adventures is an amazing free facility serving an area with high rates of child poverty. There was a shortfall of £30,000 this year to pay for staffing but the success of the last year shows that it is worth it for funders and that there is a bright future ahead! Many thanks to Nether Edge Market for your generous support which will help to pay for more staffed opening hours.
